Sunday Celebration: You Can Help!

“So you are going to write about games again?”
Yup!”
“I like reading about real things much more.”
“I’ll write about real games!

free rice logo

Today I’ll be serious. First of all, if you haven’t done that yet, you should definitely watch Zeitgeist: Addendum and Home to understand, what happens in the world while you are experiencing personal crises. Even if we considered the both movies to be propaganda, there is a big probability that they contain a lot of truth. As I’ve written before (post in Lithuanian), you can slow down the global warming by changing your consuming habits. And now I’ll show you how to feed a hungry person in a distant country!

Around 25 thousand people die because of hunger in the world every day. Usually they are kids. And all that happen not because of lazyness, but because of bad nature conditions, lack of education and schools, and wars. Two years ago John Breen developed a noncommercial online game FreeRice and donated it to the United Nations’ World Food Programme. By playing FreeRice online, you can do both: help the hungry ones and improve your knowledge for free.

Free Rice

This is what Buržujus wrote about the game:

At first, it looked like nonsense, but the brand names like Apple, Fujitsu, Radison, Toshiba, etc. sound seriously. The small game is all about checking your knowledge of English vocabulary and collecting 10 grains of rice with each right answer. The supporters turn your collected amount of rice into real rice and send them to the hungry ones in the whole world. It doesn’t seem that much. What are these 100 grains of rice? But they might be the only food for some families for the whole day.

According to Wikipedia, packages of food have been sent to Bangladesh, Cambodia, Bhutan, Uganda, and Nepal by now. Thanks to the game, about 7000 people are fed every day.

The game looks like a quiz and it is not only related to extending your English vocabulary, but also to other educational areas like math, geography, arts, or chemistry..

Math
Basic Math

Languages
English Grammar
German
Italian

Geography
Identify Countries
World Capitals

Arts
Famous Paintings

UPDATED. It’s interesting that the system of the game recognizes and adapts to the level of your knowledge. So you don’t get too easy questions. When you give a false answer, the correct choice is shown. After a while the same question is repeated. This way your memory is exercised and a new fact is taught. In my opinion, the system doesn’t work well for the arithmetical tasks. I think that not only the answer, but also the process of solving should be shown. Also the system works not that well when you know neither the questioned word, nor the matching synonym. The definitions of the words could be given in the answers.

Although the gameplay is simple, but the fictional world extends it and makes it meaningful. FreeRice wouldn’t have such an effect if you wouldn’t feel helpful and wouldn’t learn new things that might be useful in the future. What we imagine behind the game is what makes us interested and motivated. This is like in the photography of Vita Žėkaitė:

Concern is shown not only for the things that you can find in the shot, but also for the things which are behind the scenes, but which are directly related to the fixed view.

That’s it. I’ve played it for a while. At least 40 people will get food. You can help them too!

Antispam Postcard

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

Finally I dedicated some time to implement an old idea. One day I did a postcard for BadDog postcard contest. Maybe they will print it.

Antispam postcard: Attention! Please throw commercial flyers and unsubscribed newspapers to the trash container outside!

The postcard says: “Attention! Please throw commercial flyers and unsubscribed newspapers to the trash container outside!”. I have an analogue card made in German and it’s stuck up on my mailbox. This antispam filter works 90% successfully.

I am striking this task off from the TODO list and going further to the other tasks.

The Consequences of Tolerance

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

“You are from Klaipeda, aren’t you? Drug addicts are much scarier than tramps in Klaipeda. Whereas my parents frightened me by tramps in Vilnius. There is nothing worse than being a tramp!” – Dovilas once talked to me.

When there is peace and tolerance in the whole world, there will be no words to tell bad names and insult each other.

If I Opened a Bar in Berlin…

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

I work quite a lot on workdays. Sometimes I even have to sit in the studio at night in order to update the code for the developed websites on public servers. After all work I want to have enough rest on weekends. So sometimes I go around in the night Berlin.. Then day Berlin.. Then night again. So are my weekend marathons. Little by little I find my favorite places with positive, literate, creative, tolerant, and open-minded people. Last day a friend of mine raised an idea to open a bar somewhere in the city. So today, while my cloths were being washed in the house on the opposite side of the street, I was sitting in Oberholz and brainstorming what a bar should be to be a favorite place for getting together.

  • A bar should be located somewhere in East Berlin. Kreuzberg, Friedrichshein, Prenslauer Berg, or Mitte would be right districts.
  • There should be no sightboard with the name of the bar (maybe in spite of inside). The visitors would recommend this place to each other.
  • There should be benches next to the entrance for sitting down and smoking (personally I don’t propagate killing youself), or for just breathing the fresh car exhaust.
  • The furniture inside should be collected from the street. That gives an impression of simplicity.
  • There should be elements of street art. The interior could be decorated with graffiti and stickers. Special stands could offer free postcards and freetime magazines for youth.
  • There should be some unique creative or totally crazy detail or concept in the interior. For example, you can find the following in other bars of Berlin with distinctive atmosphere: a girl projected on a wall cries in real water down to a sink; furniture attached to the ceiling; the ground floats in a river; monsters frightening in shadows and water-lilies dipped into vases near a bar; etc.
  • Wireless internet is inevitable in the area, so that students could write their thesis or sit at facebook, the lovers of science could enhance wikipedia, and the managers of young progressive companies could have appointments with candidates to employees. It’s very important to have enough electricity ports for laptops at each table. Technophiles would probably use internet at nights using their iPhones browsing for information about the best events of the night where they would go after this bar.
  • At least one service worker should be of nontraditional sexual orientation. In those cases, some of the visitors are gays and lesbians. Usually, when such people visit a bar, angry ones avoid coming and joining.
  • Songs of Nouvelle Vague, Morcheeba, and Kings of Convenience could be played at daytime. Whereas in the evening DJs would play Minimal Techno, IDM, Acid Jazz, and Lounge. Disco of the sixties wouldn’t trouble from time to time too. Have I already mentioned a small dance floor?
  • The bar would never be lack of ginger and fresh mint tea, cappuccino or caramel machiato, Club Mate, Fritz Cola, Augustiner beer, Watermelonman cocktail, and absinth.
  • The food should be cheap and tasty. Something like pizza or pasta would perfectly fit.

No no. Probably I will never open a bar in my life (except some day in a far future when I turn into a millionaire for the ideas generated and for the influence to the world). But maybe my contemplation will inspire somebody. It’s always fun to gibber!

Accommodation not without Adventures

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

I was in Prague. That’s professional conference. It will be useful in daily life. I saved money so I booked a hostel for accommodation. There were four bunk beds in the room. I had to sleep with strangers.

Old town in Prague

I came in the evening and czeched in. The hostel was clean and even stylish. The crew was young and lively. The price was relatively low. I got a magnetic card which was necessary to activate the elevator and to open the door of my room. I stepped into the room. There was nobody alive, but I guessed that I would sleep with 4 girls (or gays) by the things left on the lower bed frames. I chose one of the upper bed frames, dropped my luggage onto it and went out to the old town with my colleague to try Czech beer.

I came back after a couple of hours. Maybe there would be some party in the room? That would be fun!

I opened the door. It was dark inside. And the room was full of sleepers. Some guy was snoring in my bed and my things were missing. WTF!? Then an Asian-looking girl woke up.
“Do you know where my things are” – I asked her.
“My friend put them on that bed. Probably you didn’t notice that this bed was already reserved. And that one was the only free bed in the room left, I guess..” – she pointed a bed at the door.
“OK. It’s strange that it was reserved, but there was no sign about that. But I am OK with this bed too.”
We exchanged a few more sentences. She traveled with her friends around Europe. The next morning she would go by an excursion bus to watch the city. So they went to bed that early. She would stay there one more night. That meant that my neighbors would still change.

When I came back to my room the last night, most of roommates had been left. I wanted to go up to my bed, but what’s that!? Some Asian guy was sleeping there. And the things that I had left in the morning (a book, shower materials, towel, and something else) were gone. I lightened the room by my cell phone. Nothing was left. WTF again!? I tried to wake the Asian guy and have it out. But he didn’t react. Just an unknown short-haired girl woke up in a bed nearby.
“Have you seen my things” – I asked. Somebody is sleeping in my bed.
“Really? No, I haven’t seen anything. I came here about five and fell asleep after a journey of 24 hours.”
“This seems to me like a detective story. Where did you come from?”
“San Diego, California.”
“Wow! How did you decide to visit Europe? Why Prague?”
“I was in Paris. I liked it a lot. So I decided to return back to Europe once more. It’s Prague because it’s beautiful here and relatively cheap. I work in a bar in America…”
So we got into conversation.

After a while I went down to the administrator to clarify what to do about the missing things. He offered me another room and suggested to ask about the things in the morning (a cleaner might have misunderstood and cleaned my bed). I told him that I would stay in the same room, because there still were empty beds. I chose to sleep above the American with whom I still talked about travels, Lithuania, education systems, and spare time.

Tram in Prague

In the morning, I exchanged a word with the Asian guy sleeping in my bed. He just found an empty bed and settled there. I had to wait at the registration until the cleaners of the hostel came to work. Soon I got my missing things back. That had been just some misunderstanding. I checked out from hostel, had my breakfast in a bar, and went to watch the last-day presentations of the conference.

Something interesting again! A mate sent me a press release about international art reality show “Art-o-thlon” in Vilnius.. As if I was a journalist :D

Art-o-thlon

They say, this gonna be an event of Vilnius – European Capital of Culture 2009, where young Europeans will fight for the name of the best artist. Art-o-thlon will join the formats of reality show, sport championship, and creative workshops. It’s interesting that it will be possible to watch the teams creating live directly in their studios. Also there will be open lectures about modern art and culture during the time of the championship. If I visit Vilnius in summer, I will certainly check that.

Are you interested? Registration for participation is happening until April 12th. So hurry up! You can find more information in the official website.

Funky Characters

Sunday, April 5th, 2009

Today in the evening I returned home full of impressions, but quite tired. So I fell asleep on a sofa immediately. In an hour a phone woke me up telling that picnic was over and Jenga would be brought to me soon. It had been so that after fruit’n'vegetable picnic at the river Spree, I went to the opening of a new exposition in “Talka” gallery. I wanted to communicate with my people as well as to create new relations with Latvians who own the gallery. Funtastically, they still had works of “MoyToy” from “Pictopia” festival. I didn’t hesitate to purchase Lithuanian urbanistic “Graso” keychain. I WOOD LOVE. (This was the introduction about Pictopia festival)

Two weeks ago “Pictopia” festival started in Berlin. That’s the first world-wide large-scope presentation of art and design of simplified and abstract characters. At first, there was a party at the “Weekend club“. Unfortunately, I didn’t meet any participants from Lithuania there. The next evening there was an official opening celebration in “the House of World Cultures“. Unfortunately, I didn’t meet any Lithuanians there too. But I filmed everything and talked to some other interesting optimistic people. Later the expositions of the festival were shown in 30 different galleries and public spaces of Berlin for a few days. The main exposition in “the House of World Cultures” will be working till the 3rd of May. If you come to Berlin, you should certainly visit that.

But if you don’t have Berlin in the plans for this month, I offer you to check a virtual travel through the opening celebration and a few galleries:

It was very pleasant to have Lithuanians participating in this international festival. High five to Gediminas Šiaulys, Nathan Jurevičius, and initiatives of urban arts “MoyToy“.

Milan from the First Sight

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

Yesterday I got high, cut a cloud by accident and landed in one of the two airports in Milan. I was hospitably greeted by rain as promised in the weather forecast. After an hour of traveling to the central station, the rain friendly showed me the city.

Immediately after getting off the bus, local services offered me to buy an umbrella or to go somewhere by taxi. Not paying any attention, Viktoras and I took a metro train, got to the Duomo station, and parted to do our separate businesses. Actually, I had no business, but a wished to know.

I got outside and appeared to be in front of a huge Gothic Duomo cathedral. A large screen on a restored building on the right just next to an abstract piece of sculpture, was fulling up the brains of the passers with advertisements of Italian brands (Gucci, Armani, D&G, etc.). I noticed a lot of young people with colorful umbrellas making noise on the left at a baroque-styled shopping center. “Tourists…” – I thought. A shed with some music radio station was located behind me.

I followed my nose without a map, purposes, nor pre-made opinions. “Surprise me, Milan!”

Architecture freshened me up after Berlin. Neo-classicism and modernism were fitted together in the old town. There were quite a lot of traffic circles with monuments standing in the middle. Bindweeded metal arcs, small houses on top of houses, and macdonald’s restaurants flashed here and there. Even block-based multiroom houses were esthetically nice. Rasa would like that.

Couples of dark people offered umbrellas at the exits of nearly every store or metro. There was a wide range of colors and sizes. The funniest thing was that a lot of trash bins were filled up with broken umbrellas. But there was no wind that day. So of what kind of quality were those umbrellas?

The umbrellas were put into special boxes at the entrances of each shop or cafe. Those boxes were standing outside in China town especially at small shops. While you were buying some food, the rain filled up your umbrella.

The main styles in the streets and cloth stores were classical and good-looking casual. Usually black people in suits were working as security guys. There were many fashion shops in the China town with names like “Rebeca’s Fashion”, “Gianni Fashion”, “Space Fashion”, etc. But all of them were selling similar magenta and violet cloths with blings blings. Viktorija would like that.

They say that all clubs are alike. There was Erasmus party in one of the best ones locally. The club reminded me “Matrix” in Berlin or former “Karolina” in Vilnius by music and interior. Dandy italians were hunting for hot slightly-dressed chicks and dancing by pop music with intense beat. Mantas would like that.

So what’s next? My cloths are finishing drying. The rain seems to be stopped. I’ll go to search for some pizzeria. I need to have breakfast.

Tricksy Adventure

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

This story has been told close friends for hundreds of times. But if you haven’t heard that yet, then listen!

Dovilas wrote me in Facebook that they give free food and drinks at the center of Hessen in Berlin, to commemorate the Independence of Lithuania. So I decided to go there, to have some Lithuanian conversations and fortify myself with non-junk food. He wrote me the address. I looked at the Google Maps where the place was located. And then I went there after work.

While going through security guys, I thought: “I see a lot of people inside. The party should be here”. I passed a hall full of seats where a conference or something had just finished. There were many journalists around with microphones and cam recorders. Further on I reached plenty of sedate-looking people standing at tables. They picked food and drinks from a buffet, went back to their tables, and had a bite.. But I couldn’t find any Lithuanians. Ehm.. Then I texted Dovilas asking where he was. While waiting for the answer, I took a plate of mutton soup to fill up my rumbling stomach. It was exactly what I needed. But somehow I didn’t feel comfortably. Everybody was suited and solid whereas I wore jeans and a hoodie. I was eating the soup, all the time searching for other Lithuanians and trying to avoid confrontations with security guys. Dovilas replied: “I am standing at the entrance and drinking wine”. But I was sure, he wasn’t there. Later we clarified I was in a different party. Lithuanians gathered on another side of the street.

Thanks to google maps that their search results by addresses are shown in the middle of a street instead of above houses.

Liudas induced. I thought a little bit. Just a little. And decided that I need. I need to publish the present progress of the game. When I am rich and famous, I will send a link to my grandchildren by telepathone as a joke so that they knew how everything had started. They’ll say: “Wooow, Grandpa! That’s a greatozer! Haven’t you really got any 4D games those times!?”

So I am producing an online Halma à la Chinese Checkers. Everything looks like this at the moment:

HalmaStar Screenshots #0001 - Madrid

That pink wallpaper is not a design element, but a layout grid and all elements of the page should be aligned to it. The star of the original version of the game is like in this image (the row of the corner of the star consists of four balls), but the star of my game can theoretically be of any size.

HalmaStar Screenshots #0001 - Vatican

The amount of boards will be limited. So:

  • The probability of several people playing at a board will be larger than of two players.
  • The system won’t use too many resources.
  • The player will feel like in an own inner circle.

I am just programming at the moment, but later I will need to integrate some design. I have an idea. Listen! Every board will be in a planet which is called the same as a capital of Europe, and you will see unique elements which identify the capital in the background, i.e.: Brandenburg Gate, Gediminas’ Castle, Eiffel Tower, Thames Gateway Bridge, and others. For example, the boards shown above will be presented as the planets of Madrid and Vatican respectively. The players will have avatars wearing cloths of the same color as their playing pieces. The avatars will stand in different sides of the planet. So the funny logical game will get the feature of identifying yourself as an avatar and also it will spread information about the identity of the city (and also country). I see a perfect medium for in-game advertising in my visions (i.e., posters in the city of the planet, special tees for avatars, or logos integrated into the background of the site).

Look, what prototype I scribbled:

HalmaStar Screenshots #0001 - Graphical design prototype

I haven’t decided yet what is better – photorealism or symbolism. Do you have any ideas? Or would you like to create a professional page layout for the game site? Whereas I myself will devote all my power to the stability of functionality (with and without Javascript), the standards of semantics, the technical implementation of the graphical design, and additional features.
